As of the 2010 census, the town/city population was 13,155. The town/city is titled after Union General James Birdseye Mc - Pherson, a Civil War general. It is home to Mc - Pherson College and Central Christian College.

In 1854, the Kansas Territory was organized, then in 1861 Kansas became the 34th U.S.

In 1867, Mc - Pherson County was founded.

Mc - Pherson was established in 1872 by the twelve members of the Mc - Pherson Town Company. In 1887, town/city officials began a floundered attempt to have the improve titled the state capital.

The first postal service in Mc - Pherson was established in 1873. Mc - Pherson was incorporated as a town/city in 1874. In 1878, Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway and parties from Marion County and Mc - Pherson County chartered the Marion and Mc - Pherson Railway Company. In 1879, a branch line was assembled from Florence to Mc - Pherson, in 1880 it was extended to Lyons, in 1881 it was extended to Ellinwood. The line was leased and directed by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.

The line from Florence to Marion, was abandoned in 1968. In 1992, the line from Marion to Mc - Pherson was sold to Central Kansas Railway.

In 1993, after heavy flood damage, the line from Marion to Mc - Pherson was abandoned.

The initial branch line connected Florence, Marion, Canada, Hillsboro, Lehigh, Canton, Galva, Mc - Pherson, Conway, Windom, Little River, Mitchell, Lyons, Chase, Ellinwood.

In 1887, the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway assembled a chief line from Herington through Mc - Pherson to Pratt. In 1888, this line was extended to Liberal.

The National Old Trails Road, also known as the Ocean-to-Ocean Highway, was established in 1912, and was routed through Windom, Conway and Mc - Pherson.

In the 1930s, the small-town refinery sponsored the Mc - Pherson Globe Refiners basketball team (AAU).

The Refiners' home court is now the Mc - Pherson Community Building at 121 East Marlin and can be toured by contacting the small-town Convention and Visitors Bureau.

According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 7.23 square miles (18.73 km2), of which 7.18 square miles (18.60 km2) is territory and 0.05 square miles (0.13 km2) is water. South and west of town are four units of the reclaimed Mc - Pherson Valley Wetlands, acquired and managed by Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, Ducks Unlimited, and the U.S.

According to the Koppen Climate Classification system, Mc - Pherson has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. In the city, the populace was spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 11.6% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older.

Mc - Pherson College and Central Christian College is positioned in Mc - Pherson.

Mc - Pherson is part of Unified School District 418. Mc - Pherson was positioned on the National Old Trails Road, also known as the Ocean-to-Ocean Highway, that was established in 1912.
