As of the 2010 census, the town/city population was 2,216. Lakin was established in 1874. It was titled for David Long Lakin, former treasurer of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. A postal service has been in operation in Lakin since March 1874. Lakin was designated governmental center of county in 1888. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 0.98 square miles (2.54 km2), all of it land. As of the census of 2010, there were 2,216 citizens , 781 homeholds, and 573 families residing in the city.
