As of the 2010 census, the town/city population was 224. The name Fontana comes from the French word fontaine, meaning fountain or a spring-like water source.

It was given to the small town/city from a spring near the town site. Fontana's history as a improve dates back to the early 19th century, however incorporation did not occur until 1889. Captain David Martin, a veteran of the War of 1812 received a territory grant for 160 acres (0.65 km2) in Lykins County, Kansas (Miami County, Kansas) due to an 1855 congressional act.

Fontana is positioned at 38 25 33 N 94 50 17 W (38.425879, 94.838089). According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 0.84 square miles (2.18 km2), all of it land. As of the census of 2010, there were 224 citizens , 72 homeholds, and 55 families residing in the city.

The ethnic makeup of the town/city was 92.9% White, 0.4% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 2.7% from other competitions, and 3.1% from two or more competitions.

There were 72 homeholds of which 48.6% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 56.9% were married couples living together, 13.9% had a female homeholder with no husband present, 5.6% had a male homeholder with no wife present, and 23.6% were non-families.

19.4% of all homeholds were made up of individuals and 9.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.

The median age in the town/city was 32.2 years.

31.7% of inhabitants were under the age of 18; 11.6% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 27.2% were from 25 to 44; 21.9% were from 45 to 64; and 7.6% were 65 years of age or older.

As of the census of 2000, there were 149 citizens , 61 homeholds, and 46 families residing in the city.

Fontana has a farm-based economy, of which Fontana Co-Op is importance to the region farmers. Located inside Fontana was one enhance school, Fontana Elementary, having a total enrollment of approximately 100 students from kindergarten through 5th grades.

On the 2007 Kansas State Assessments in 2007, Fontana Elementary received building-wide Kansas Standard of Excellence certificates for both reading and math, and in 2008 for reading, math, and science.

In 2007, Fontana Elementary also received the Kansas State Department of Education Governor's Achievement Award, given to schools whose students performed in the top 5% of all Kansas schools. As part of the Prairie View school precinct (USD 362), Fontana students from grades 6 12 attend Prairie View Middle School or Prairie View High School in La Cygne, Kansas.

In approximately 2011, the Prairie View School Board expressed an interest in replacing or remodeling Fontana Elementary.

Various proposals were made, including one to build a new school close to Prairie View Middle School, but the Board eventually settled on a decision to grew close-by Parker Elementary, which was part of Prairie View along with Fontana.
